En sus primeros años, Armstrong era conocido sobre todo por su virtuosismo con la corneta y la trompeta.

Las improvisaciones que hizo en aquellas grabaciones sobre estándares del jazz de Nueva Orleans y sobre otras canciones populares del momento, han resistido perfectamente el paso del tiempo hasta el punto de soportar la comparación con cualquiera de las hechas por otros intérpretes posteriores.

The Hot Five was Louis Armstrong´s first jazz recording band led under his own name.

It was a typical New Orleans Jazz Band in instrumentation, consisting of trumpet, clarinet, and trombone backed by a rhythm section.

The original New Orleans jazz style leaned heavily on collective improvisation, where the three horns together played the lead: the trumpet played the main melody, and the clarinet and trombone played improvised accompaniments to the melody.

This tradition was continued in the Hot Five, but because of Armstrong's creative gifts as a trumpet player, solo passages where the trumpet played alone began to appear more frequently.

In these brilliant solos, Armstrong laid down the basic vocabulary of jazz improvising, and became its founding and most influential exponent.

The Hot Five a recording group organized at the suggestion of Richard M. Jones for Okeh Records.
All their records were made in Okeh's Chicago, Illionis recording studio.

The exact same personel recorded a session made under the pseudonym "Lil's Hotshots" for Vocalion / Brunswick.

While the musicians in the Hot 5 played together in other contexts, as the Hot 5 they were a recording studio band that performed live only for two parties organized by Okeh Records.

There were two different groups called "Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five", the first recording from 1925 through 1927 and the second in 1928.

In this year Armstrong revamped the recording band, replacing everyone but himself with his band-members in the Carroll Dickerson Orchestra which Armstrong was playing with Fred Robinson, trombone, Jimmy Strong, clarinet and tenor saxophone, Earl Hines, piano, Mancy Carr (not "Cara" as has often been misprinted) on banjo, and Zutty Singleton on drums); Armstrong was the only musician in both groups.

Louis Armstrong and his Hot Seven were the companion sessions of the Hot Five sides.

The personel is the same as the first Hot Five records except that John Thomas of Erskine Tate´s Vendome Orchestra takes over Kid Ory´s place on trombone, Pete Briggs of the Carroll Dickenson Orchestra plays Tuba, and Baby Dodds plays drums.

It is interesting to note that the addition of the tuba and drums to these sessions is probably less of an artistic decision than a technological one.

In 1928 Okeh switched from an acoustic means of recording music to the new improved sounding electrical based systems. The acoustic recording process was often ruined by the vibration created by drums or bass, and recording engineers preferred not to have these instruments in a session or placed them so far from the recording horn, that they can rarely be heard well on the old acoustic recordings.

Louis Armstrong

Louis Armstrong, nació el 4 de julio de 1900 en New Orleáns (Louisiana) en el seno de una familia muy pobre y en uno de los barrios marginales de aquélla ciudad.

Sin antecedentes musicales en su familia, su interés por este arte se germina oyendo tocar en su ciudad natal las célebres bandas neorleanesas que desfilan habitualmente por las avenidas de la ciudad.

Su primer contacto con la música tuvo lugar en un reformatorio para niños abandonados cuando es admitido por buena conducta en la banda del reformatorio.

Allí aconsejado por el director musical de la misma, Peter Davis, opta por la trompeta entre otros otros instrumentos.

Cuando en 1914 sale del reformatorio, empieza a trabajar en los cabarets de Storyville, donde estaban concentrados todos los locales nocturnos de la ciudad, y allí conoce al cornetista
King Oliver.

En 1918, con una bien ganada reputación como cornetista, es contratado por el director de orquesta, Kid Ory.

Poco tiempo después, es Fate Marable, quien se fija en él para que se incorpore a su prestigiosa banda que actúa diariamente en los barcos de vapor que navegan por el Mississippi.

En 1922, llega su gran oportunidad:

King Oliver lo llama para que se incorpore a su "Creole Jazz Band" en Chicago.

Allí comienza su apoteósica carrera. Graba sus primeros discos y su fama llega a oídos del mismísimo, Fletcher Henderson, el mejor director de orquesta negro del momento, quien le ofrece un contrato para que se una a su banda.

En sólo un año, revoluciona el estilo y la forma de tocar de sus compañeros y graba con las mejores cantantes de blues de la época, entre otras con la gran, Bessie Smith.

Deja la banda de Fletcher, y entre 1925 y 1928, inicia uno de los capítulos mas trascendentales de la historia del jazz.

Forma sus dos propios grupos, primero los "Hot Five" y luego los "Hot Seven" y las grabaciones de aquellos años constituyen la semilla germinal de todo el jazz que hoy conocemos.

Son diecisiete años al frente de grandes formaciones.

Viaja a Europa por primera vez en 1932, vuelve en 1934 consiguiendo un espectacular éxito en Paris.

Hollywood lo reclama y aparece en numerosas películas de desigual calidad.

A mediados de los años cuarenta, forma su celebérrimo grupo: "All Stars" con el trombonista, Jack Teagarden, el clarinetista, Barney Bigard, el pianista, Earl Hines, el baterista, "Big Sid" Catlett, y el contrabajista, Arvell Shaw.

Con ellos, Louis Armstrong se presenta el 13 de agosto de 1947 en el club: "Billy Berg's" de Los Ángeles y esa nueva etapa, se prolongaría hasta el final de su vida.

Grabó innumerables discos, ofreció magníficos conciertos, sus músicos se renovaban sin que la calidad del grupo se resquebrajara, y el mundo entero escuchó a Louis Armstrong llevar su sempiterna sonrisa por los cinco continentes hasta que dos días después de celebrar su 71 cumpleaños, el corazón le dejó de funcionar.

Falleció en su casa de Corona (New York) el 6 de julio de 1971.

Allí comienza su apoteósica carrera. Graba sus primeros discos y su fama llega a oídos del mismísimo, Fletcher Henderson, el mejor director de orquesta negro del momento, quien le ofrece un contrato para que se una a su banda.

Durante esta época, hizo también muchas grabaciones de forma independiente con los arreglos de un viejo amigo de Nueva Orleans, el pianista Clarence Williams, como por ejemplo unos dúos con su rival musical Sidney Bechet y una serie de acompañamientos con los Blues singers.

En sólo un año, revoluciona el estilo y la forma de tocar de sus compañeros y graba con las mejores cantantes de blues de la época, entre otras con la gran, Bessie Smith.

Deja la banda de Fletcher, y entre 1925 y 1928, inicia uno de los capítulos mas trascendentales de la historia del jazz.
